Food Service Feasibility Study One of the goals of the Southside School Board is to increase the nutritional intake of our students. To work toward this goal, a committee has been formed to examine the feasibility of building a kitchen and starting our own food service program. (Currently, we contract with the Shelton School District and our food is brought to us daily in warming ovens.) The committee consists of three Board members, three community members, and two staff members. We have been meeting to examine the potential costs, benefits, and regulations involved with such an undertaking. Last month, the committee visited the Griffin School District to learn more about their food service program. We were impressed with what we saw. All of the foods were baked (not fried) and prepared on site from scratch. Students had the choice between a hot entrée and an all organic salad bar. The program was health, tasty, and efficient, with meals costing the same amount as we charge here at Southside. Griffin’s food service program has become the model that we are looking at for our own program. We have mapped out how the Community Room could be converted into a kitchen, and we are in the process of computing what it would cost to set up the necessary equipment. Griffin School District is assisting us with the program budget planning to determine if we can add this program without reducing funding for academic programs. The committee meets at 6:00 pm on the last Thursday of each month. All parents and community members are invited to attend. In June we will make a recommendation to the School Board. If the Board decides to move ahead, next school year will be spent writing grants, raising money, and converting the Community Room. The food service program would begin in the fall of 2009. If you are interested in working with the committee, or if you have any questions, please contact the Superintendent. |
